1 Line Review: Minus the expected good looks and screen presence of a hero for a typical Bollywood romantic movie and few abuses here and there, a decent watch.
If you were living under a rock and have never heard of the person behind the Kolaveri Di anthem, you can clearly miss the hero of the movie as some side, side, side actor. Ya those many sides. He does not look anything like one of the Khan’s or Kapoor’s or for that matter Kumar. His name is Dhanush. The initial one hour I kept convincing myself that he IS the main hero of this movie and there will no other super hero appear with larger than life screen presence. It took time but the fact did sink in before the interval.
The movie is based in Banaras and is a love quadrangle. A life long love story of the protagonist and the ups and downs involved. It was a bumpy ride for sure. Dhanush (Kundan) did a great job of performing a true lover boy from the very first time when he sees Zoya (Sonam Kapoor). His love for her became eternal, instantly. He continued to stay in Banaras and she moved out for higher studies and when she came back, the real story began!
Film is witty at ALL times, movie plays on along with Kundan’s commentary in the background, his accent might not be the best for a hindi movie hero but then no body’s gonna question a Shah Rukh Khan’s kind of lousy attempt to become a Tamilian (in Ra. One, if you watched it, I was one among few brave hearts who did) hence that should not be looked deep into. There are many situational one liners that take the cake. Here’s just 2 of them – ‘pyaar na hua UPSC ka exam ho gaya, pass hi nahin ho raha’, ‘chote shehron ke pyaar ko aksar doctor engineer utha le jaate hain’.
Special mention should be given to Swara Bhaskar (Bindiya – she has devoted her life in loving Kundan) and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub (Murari – Kundan’s best friend and partner in all crime). These 2 kept the movie alive and kicking at all times, after the initial few appearances you will automatically start expecting awesomeness as soon as they appear back on screen. Now that’s an amazing feat for side actors. In the end you will agree with me that these 2 actors were much better than the lead actors.
Sonam Kapoor has improvised from her previous performances and I appreciated her acting in this movie. Abhay Deol is the 4th connection in this love quadrangle and he brings in the element of surprise just before the interval. Watch out for that.
First half of the movie was very sticky and second half kind of lost me many times inbetween, at times I was confused too. But then the regular twists in the story kept me glued, not many scripts can do that successfully, this one did.
Over all, it was a good watch. Expectations ke bahut upar. Go for it.
Agree with you. expectations ke bahut upar. I just loved Dhanush acting he is a man without body and a glamorous face but still can impress people with his acting skills and expressions which is missing in almost all khans and kapoors of our industry.I wish to see more of his acting in his upcoming movies.
