Disclaimer: I almost slept in the end. No kidding. Hence I don’t know what happened in the climax. This review is only for the parts I was awake.
Yes its a thriller movie, yes it has a detective (a.k.a Jagga), yes everyone is singing in the movie, yes it appears to be addressing kids. Am sure kids would have enjoyed it. But am no kid (or so me thinks).
The movie kept reminding me of Barfi! but minus the emotional attachment Barfi! had with the audience. This plot was slow, many (including Ranbir) appeared to be overacting. Too many sets, too many flashbacks and back and too little done to keep the audience interested in the main story line. I was too distracted with too many moving parts.
‘Galti se mistake’ is one of the best energetic songs with the best visuals. But that alone could not have saved the movie.
Katrina (as much as I love her) does not really add up to sustain interest in the plot either. Saswata Chatterjee has an elaborate role and he justifies his character, Saurabh Shukla and Sayani Gupta did not have much to prove. BTW, do watch Inside Edge on Amazon Prime, there she plays a much important role.
I would not recommend you go for this one. But I can surely guarantee it will soon start doing multiple rounds on TV.
Bonus: In an interview Ranbir has himself agreed that such movies are too hard to predict, it may just tank at the box office (thats what happened). Jagga Jasoos took way too much time to complete (around 2 years) and he will not be doing such movies anymore, he said in the interview. Watch AIB podcast for more.
