Honest FAN Movie Review From A Non-Fan

Fan is a story of an obsessive fan (Gaurav) of a superstar Aryan Khanna. Both played by Shah Rukh Khan himself.

First things first. This movie does not have a single song. Yes, you heard it right. Its an SRK movie and its a Yash Raj production but still it does not have a song. Sorry to break your heart but even the ‘Jabra Fan’ song is only for promotional purposes and does not feature in the movie. Secondly, he is not hamming around in the movie. And to top it all, the runtime of the movie is almost around two and half hours.

Wow! As a non-srk-fan I was very happy with these 2 super trivia facts itself, as it clearly meant that he might have actually ended up doing the real stuff (the likes of Swades and Chakde) which all the non-fans also expected out of SRK and were duped with Happy New Year, Dilwale and Chennai Express recently! If you are a die hard srk fan, don’t hate me for saying so, deep within you also know these were dud movies.

What happens when a fan of a superstar goes overboard, tries to get way too close, way to comfortable? Gaurav happens. And when Gaurav happens, the superstar starts running behind the fan. And how does that end? Well, you got to go thru this rollercoaster FAN journey to discover that. SRK fans will gloat on the fact that this movie offers them double bonanza. SRK vs SRK. Every scene in the movie has SRK in it. Guess no other SRK movie could boost of such a fact!

The portrayal of Gaurav, the fan, impressed me a lot. It almost made me believe he is not SRK and is an actual fan trying to be like SRK and who has lived all his life with only one religion – the superstar he believed in. Do excuse me for comparing Gaurav with Kusum (of the Tanu Weds Manu Returns fame) but somehow they truly did resemble each other. Please have a look yourself. Just to keep the perspective right, Kangana did a far better job as Kusum. Not that anyone was comparing, am just saying.

And on the other hand his portrayal of the superstar Aryan Khanna and so much exposure to his own house Mannat’s entrance, gave me a feeling of the SRK superstar that he already is. His lifestyle has always amazed me, hence. Many years back Discovery channel ran a show also on his real life, I loved that show.

The movie runs for a tad bit longer than expected. Instead of two and half hours, it could have done a sharper and crisper job in two hours, editing few pretty long scenes. I also expected the ‘Jabra Fan’ song to play when the credits rolled. Still I had high hopes and I was not disappointed. Had previously given a miss to his so-called-box-office hits Dilwale and Happy New year (for the record I don’t watch them even when they are on TV) but with FAN, I was expecting a ChakDe and Swades wala SRK. And I kind-of got what I hoped for.

Salil Jamdar of Sudh Desi Gaane fame made an epic parody of the Jabra Fan song and he echos a very similar sentiment as mine, check out his hilarious video here >

Final Verdict – Fan or not, go watch it, you will not be disappointed.

Bonus – A not so fan, watching fan.

In summers, Its not as much fun unless it’s RUNNING SUCCESSFULLY 🙂
