Bhaag Milkha Bhaag Review

1 Line Review: A life story portrayed beautifully, a MUST watch!

For starters, this is a biographical motion picture on Milkha Singh, the famous Indian Athlete who won many medals for India during the 50’s and the 60’s. Sounds like a simple life story? You bet it was not! The name of the movie itself has a emotional connect to it and is not just because Milkha Singh was a runner and it sounds cool to name the movie like that.

This is a real life story one person and it have been exceptionally well made. Initial reviews must be suggesting that it’s a long movie with a run time of 3 hours and 15 minutes. Trust me, it is not, I did NOT feel it. We were even seated when the credits rolled as we were loving the rock version of the title song. It’s goooood.

Don’t go by what people say, experience it yourself. If you are true movie lover, you will love it and hate those who start murmuring as soon as there is an emotional scene. Ensure you give them a strong stare when the lights are back on, they deserve worse.

From his childhood days, India Pakistan partition time, how he lost all family members, how all got massacred in front of his eyes, how he found all bodies behind his house, how he almost became a dacoit, how he lost his love of his life, how his stint with Army taught him so much, how his first run for milk and egg got the best out of him, how his coaches trusted in him & gave everything they could to train him and how he run every time in every contest like its his last run of life! Now that is something you SHOULD definitely watch and watch again.

There are many moments which will hit you hard (if you continue to watch it in all its seriousness) like the scene where there is a striking discovery of all the dead bodies, his days just after partition, runs with injured legs and when he goes back to his house after ages.

One thing that will surround you is the aura of Milkha Singh and the beauty with which Farhan Akhtar played it. I mean from the hair style, running style and the body he build for this movie speaks volume about the dedication involved in getting into the shoes of Milkha Singh. Well, quite literally!

Another notable work was done by Pavan Malhotra as Milkha’s coach Gurudev. Pavan is an fine actor and is well known for his performances in Black Friday (Tiger Memon) and in the SRK wala Don series he plays Narang. His performance here is worth the mention. Another person who did a great job is Divya Dutta, playing Milkha’s sister. Very well done. She was last seen in Lootera (my review here). Sonam Kapoor has a very short role. It was even reported that she took only Rs. 11 for this movie! A Pakistani actress also debuted – Meesha Shafi (the swimming champ) short and crisp role. She was last seen in Mira Nair’s Reluctant Fundamentalist.

Paan Singh Tomar was also a biopic of an Army man becoming a national star in athletics but then the story was different there. Both are classic movies and very well made. Please do not compare them.

Feedback on the music of this movie was not great until I actually watched the movie! The music grows on you, yes it does. Especially the rock version on the title track, Zinda and Maston ka jhund.

I recommend you go for it now. Bhaag Insaan Bhaag!
