1 Line review: Outright boring.
Frankly, I have seen few other Rohit Shetty movies which I have liked and did not get bored. Bol Bachchan and Singham are a few examples. For that matter even Golmaal and Golmaal Returns had some good moments of real non sense fun and I enjoyed it, in bits that is.
But Chennai Express disappointed me, even when I took the public advice seriously of not looking for logic and to enjoy the non sense fun. I was game for it. But then the movie never showed me the fun part, at all. It was boring.
Another frank confession – I went to a multiplex to watch ‘Tees Maar Khan’. Yes I did. Watching Chennai Express, I was going through the same feeling. yeah, that boring. The good part was that I wasted only Rs.100 instead of Rs. 400 which many multiplexes were charging in the first week.

This is how the hall looked during the movie: deserted |
Now about the movie – A below average story (for sake of a better word), cheap usage of SRK’s famous movie dialogues by SRK himself (not one but many times), utterly irritating usage of communication between Deepika and SRK in singing ishtyle multiple times, heavy usage of tamil language in a hindi movie (many a times with the over powering sets and heavy tamil usage you will forget that it’s a hindi movie, it might look like a tamil film having a few hindi words), many sequences which have no relevance in the story, very few car crashes (which actually is symbolic with Rohit Shetty movies but was missing in this one), below average songs, slow paced story (again, for the lack of a better word am using ‘story’) and much much much more.
SRK giving a hand to Deepika for getting on the train; SRK saying – Rahul, naam toh nahin suna hoga; SRK saying – My name is Rahul and I am not a terrorist, and then giving an awkward smile; SRK promoting Nokia Lumia and giving out the price out load multiple times. The list is long.
And this movie crossed Rs.100 Crores collection in the first 3 days itself. Should be running successfully in Tamil Nadu for sure. My guess is as good as yours for why this movie is doing so well. This was possible only because of SRK mania. Totally agree. But frankly that fact is no barometer for a good cinema. It was a boring movie and that cannot be erased with the box office collection numbers.
The climax speech by SRK was still bearable because of the social message it had, but then came the lungi song in the end where the lead starts were NOT wearing any lungi, but would get a great response since its dedicated to the god himself – Rajani Saar.
My suggestion – Get off this train, baby!
Very nice review, as usual…Totally agree with you..The movie was not that entertaining..Loved Deepika's performance though 🙂
Thanks Dipashri for your encouragement, as always! 🙂 Ya liked Deepika but overall, it was a major thumps down!
