First things first – It was (and will always remain) a great day for the Indian Cricket as on this very day in 1983 India lifted the World Cup for the first time, in London. Under the captaincy of Kapil Dev this was made possible! [India 183 (54.4/60 overs); West Indies 140 (52/60 overs) India won by 43 runs!] Awesomeness was redefined when Dhoni and company lifted it again last year!! 🙂
But then from my birthday in 2009, my anticipation to this day reduced as now the first thing that I think of is not cakes, party or gifts, it’s my favorite pop icon and the King of Pop – Michael Jackson. He died on 25th June 2009. Yes.
Now let me take you many years back for you to know why this fact is important/ striking / saddening to me. When I was in class 8th or so, my friend Sourav Mitra got a big music system, with speakers almost reaching my shoulders, almost. Guess which only cassette he got free with the system – ‘Dangerous’ by Michael Jackson. That was the day and today is another. No day passes by when I have not played one or the other song from this legend. My music listening habits were refined and redefined by him (by MJ). Then came a lot of other helpful support that I got in Gomia in sustaining my music habits, which I have talked about in a few earlier blog post, already. In those days (read Golden Days) birthday parties used to start with making of the cake ourselves at home, get some groceries for the party, invite 10-15 class mates, dance for at least an hour with music played in a small music system, become a dance hero for that 1 awesome step which only you do well. Then eat like crazy, chillax and go back.
- Warner collects around $2 million/ year in royalties for the birthday song.
- According to ‘Guinness Book of World Records’, “Happy Birthday to You” is the most recognized song, No.2 – “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow”.
- The tune of this song comes from a 1893 song -“Good Morning to All”.
- Warner claims that the United States copyright for ‘Happy Birthday’ will not expire until 2030.
