Reluctant Fundamentalist Review

1 Line Review: Messaging may be right but way too slow.

This is a story based during the 9/11 times of a Pakistani boy (Changez) who goes to America for studies, grabs a high paying job at one of the best consulting firms where he has a knack of working in a perfect way which impresses his boss to the core. His job actually requires him to look into ways in which efficiency of the client could be increased, mostly by downsizing and which ofcourse is not liked by the employees.

But the movie is all about how the American outlook on Pakistanis change post 9/11. His own friends and colleagues who used to love hanging around with him change their attitude towards his religion and indirectly towards him. He is embarrassed at the airport once by the authorities who pick him up for a random check and is asked to strip! His job of sacking people finally sucked his conscience and he quit. His own girl friend (American) tries to be with him during such times but then misunderstanding problems crop up and he moves away from her.  With no job and girlfriend he moves back to Pakistan and starts teaching at a college. Lot of pressure creeps up to join the mujahedeen groups but he does not.

Movie actually starts with an American getting kidnapped in Pakistan and the protagonist becomes a suspect. An American journalist comes to his college to interview him to know more about his life. Flashback plays along with this interview. Was this person really a journalist? Was Changez really involved in this kidnapping? What really does happen in this college? Was Changez what he showed he was? Watch the movie to get all the answers.

My take on this 2 hour 10 minutes movie is that, it made me confused and bored. I kept asking for more but I did not get any. I kept thinking there would be more to the hour long suspense that is being created but I was disappointed. I would have truly loved the movie if the pace was fast enough and should not have been more than 1 hour 10 minutes long, at best.

The emotion that Mira Nair tried to portray did not come out clearly, it gave mixed signals, atleast it lost its way since it was so boringly slow paced.

Lastly, am done with 9/11 impact movies. Either this movie came out late or Mira Nair was over confident on playing the 9/11 saga way too much.

I would recommend this a cable TV or a DVD watch.
