Les Misérables is pronounced as Lay-mee-zay-raahbl, you can hear the pronunciation here. It is based on a 1862 novel by Victor Hugo and its a musical! What does that mean? Well, it simply means that all the characters in the movie talk to each-others and many a times with themselves in a singing mode! Not like Akshay Kumar singing Chinta-ta-chita-chita but more like in theater plays.
The movie has an amazing star cast including Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, and Amanda Seyfried. Has already won multiple Golden Globe Awards and is set to rule the Oscars as well.
BUT, the concept is new to the Indian audience, atleast as much as I learnt from the audience reaction in the auditorium. You get the feeling that all this singing and talking will finish in a while and they will get to real life but then its a more than 2.5 hours of this play that you have got yourself into. Since the actors are amazingly talented and the story moves fast enough encompassing few love stories, a convict and police story as well as The French Revolution, you will be able to endure it. If, only if you have a good amount of patience in you.
Honestly, many viewers left inbetween. Few in the 1st half and many in the 2nd half. Few even tried mocking the so much of singing dose but was thankfully shut out by a few serious movie goer, good! Personally I like watching movies with no disturbance at all.
Before you go watch this movie, prepare yourself:
1. Movie is lengthy, have patience;
2. Everyone, all the time will be talking in a singing mode. Set your expectations right;
3. There are multiple monologues. Yes, in the same singing mode. Take multiple deep breaths, calm yourself down;
4. Music is very good and peppy but then it does get monotonous in the second half;
5. The lyrics will impress you, concentrate;
6. Leave the auditorium if you are not enjoying and let others watch it peacefully 🙂
Not sure how to rate this movie, hence am not. You be your own judge.
