How to use PR, effectively

As the name suggests – Public Relations – its all about maintaining relations with Public. This would include all media relations, publicity, customer/industry/employee/government relations, article writing etc.

PR used to be pretty simple a couple of decades back when all it meant was to make major company announcements through press releases, that too sent only to a few journalists and the stock market would jump up or down with this kind of news. Not anymore. Using press releases is not merely the last step in Public relations but it has grown to publishing Press Release online and that too at many forums (eg. www.indiaprwire.com, www.prlog.org, www.pressreleasepoint.com, www.newswiretoday.com ) plus there are many other things that the agency needs to do, in order to make sure that the buzz is really a buzz!!

Let’s start with the Press Release itself, this document itself should be an ocean of keywords that your customers/prospects use while looking for products/services in your industry. Like if Perfios (www.perfios.com) is in Personal Finance Software then it would use keywords like personal finance India, personal finance software India and so on in their Press Releases. It should serve multiple purposes – send out the news for which the release was done plus serves as the document that appears when customers/prospects search for your organization. Also, place links directing readers to your site on the release document itself, for easy reference.

Sign up with news/content sites. Which needs content for their site and also to increase their credibility and page views they would happily oblige you, provided you write sense. Make sure you do not promote your company in such articles, as then it becomes advertising, which is a separate game all together. Ideally you should talk about the industry you are in. They would post your articles on their relevant sections and give due credit to you. This is exactly what is required. These articles also become searchable when people look for your industry/company news. As you would be doing it regularly across various websites, your relevance in the market increases, you gain more credibility, more and more websites will approach you to write articles for them, hence more keywords, more search results…and on.

Also check if any of the sites can set up a chat session for you on their website, it would be great. Make sure that the site organizing this event is relevant to your industry. The topic should be out in advance, should have been advertised well by your PR agency, your website etc. Idea is to make sure you drive traffic to your website. Your Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn, Buzz should be buzzing with any event that takes pace in your organization.

But wait, this is not your primary objective, you did not come here to write articles. Did you? Hence never get carried away with the publicity, always focus on your main objective. PR is only about Public Relations, but that does not make it less important. Idea is to have the right balance in your PR activities…
