1 Line Review: Raw, funny and cute.
Ayushmann Khurrana as Prem Prakash Tiwari will blow your mind. Yes, he is that good in this movie. Even though Vicky Donor remains his best performance, Dum Laga Ke Haisa comes very very close to it.
Prem Prakash Tiwari owns a cassette shop in Haridwar, along with his father Mr. Chandrabhan Tiwari, played by iconic Sanjay Mishra (just his name cracks me up, he is that good in comic roles and he leaves no stones unturned in this movie as well). Prem is a school drop out and when his father finds an opportunity to get him married to an educated girl, he quickly convinces the family to get him hooked up. How Prem Kumar Tiwari fights back is an epic comic scene. The shaadi happens in an community wedding arrangement, this is also a funny scene.
Prem is also part of an Akhara where he gets all the society gyaan from his teacher and leader. All these conversations will crack you up.
The girl whom Prem marries is Sandhya (played by Bhumi Pednekar in her first movie. She worked as assistant to casting director at Yash Raj Films for over 6 years before being selected for this role in an audition) and she is an educated women but a little healthier than Prem and that is a big concern Prem has with her. He is not comfortable roaming around with her in the city because of this reason. He tries too hard not even to touch her. Way too funny scenes on this part too.
This is a cassettes era and CD’s are taking over, Prem’s primary job all day is to record selection of songs in a blank cassette for customers. His family friend and neighbour is setting up a CD shop and this will kill Tiwari’s family business and that’s when they challenge Prem to take part in the Dum laga Ke Haisa competition, winning it would mean they will not sabotage Tiwari business.
This was a particularly tough ask for Prem since this competition involved carrying your wife on your shoulders and run crossing many hurdles on the way. His wife has just filed a divorce case on him and they were serving a 6 months notice to each other and on top of that Sandhya was not a thin lady to carry.
How else could someone have done it? Only with love mister, only with love! 🙂
As I said, its cute, raw and its full of funny parts. The entire family on both the sides have done a super job. Sanjay Mishra tops the list.
The entire movie set would remind you of another movie which released last year – Ankhon Dekhi (my review here). That movie was funny but was kind of creepy with its ending. This one has a happy ending! 🙂 And ya, I liked Happy ending too 🙂 (my review here)
Watch it when you can.
Bonus:
Kumar Shanu is my all time fav singer and this song blew me over –
