1 Line Review: Watch out, he will see through you. Desi istyle.
Not to take away anything from my all time favourite Byomkesh Bakshi played by Rajit Kapur. Cannot believe it’s been 23 years since that first appeared on Doordarshan. I still watch them all on YouTube.
Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! (DBB) is another super entertainer from the house of Dibakar Banerjee. ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’ is one of my favourite movies. DBB belongs to Sushant Singh Rajput. His class act is printed all over the movie. He fits the description of an intuitive person who would question everything and see through everything. Based in Calcutta in the year 1942, in the british raj, the story revolves around a missing person who’s son comes over to DBB for help. Mr. Bakshy gets slapped instantly for his analysis. The movie gets interesting from that instant itself. Gets complex with Chinese drug mafia and Japanese Army involvement.
The cinematography in the movie is brilliant, the attention to detail (including everyone’s dresses) for ensuring you get the feel of that era – commendable, dedication by the side actors to give their best for delivering an awesome finished product – perfect.
Watch out for Angoori Devi, some glamour quotient there. Mr. Bakshy’s side kick (Anand Tiwari, loved him in Go Goa Gone) was constantly funny, all the hostel roommates were good and the Mr. Shaking hand caretaker/cook of the hostel was cutely funny.
So what is not so good with the movie? Well, the pace. It moves real slow. With a run time of two and half hours, it should have been nothing more than 2 hours at best. For a suspense thriller, fast pace would have kept me on the edge of my seat. Constantly.
Also, It has it’s fair share of grossness and blood bath but no songs (thankgod) in the movie, all played in the background if they were played. ‘Calcutta kiss’, Jaanam and ‘Byomkesh in love’ are good songs btw.
I strongly recommend you do NOT take young kids with you for this movie.
Bonus: ‘Calcutta Kiss’ is performed by Lauren Gottlieb (most remembered for Jhalak Dikhla Jaa), here’s the song (not in the movie) >>
Am waiting to see many more movies in this series, it was a very good start.
