Yes, this is Raj Koothrappali from The Big Bang Theory (TBBG) fame. The book – ‘Yes, My Accent is Real and some other things I haven’t told you’ is a compilation of short stories from Kunal Nayyar’s life. A kind of autobiography if you may call it. Since he is just 34 now, I guess its too early for him to call it a autobiography hence calls it life essays.
The book will give you an insiders look into the funny man Raj and how he got the opportunity to become Raj. He went to the US to study but he soon realised he can actually do acting as well. But he also confronts that the most he tried to act, it showed that he was not comfortable hence decided to stick to being natural, his comic timing was good and that was the biggest plus (if you watch Raj in TBBT you will know what he means). I also have a good sense of humour, guess I should do something about it!? 🙂
He also talk about his love for sports, especially Badminton and ping pong (TT or Table Tennis as we call it). Who knew he was such a badminton champion! The chapters explaining his Badminton days are just too gripping.
Then he talks about all his love affairs and girlfriends. The stories will make you hug Kunal as they might make you feel sorry for him!
His struggle days as a theatre actor and then the days when he was counting his days for his visa to expire and how he auditioned in an Apple Store and moved to LA from Portland for a $8 a day job, worked at a raw food restaurant etc. showcases his struggle and perseverance for making it big in the entertainment industry.
There are multiple chapters on Indian festivals as though its targeted for non-Indian audience. You can ignore them, as they sound like teaching a 5 year old about Holi, Diwali and Rakhi. He also has a chapter on his dad’s life lessons, sounds like random stuff dad’s tell their kids.
Otherwise a fun quick read.
