Bombay Talkies Review

1 Line Review: 4 stories in 2 hours, will not disappoint you.
This film has four short films. Directed by Karan Johar, Dibakar Banerjee, Zoya Akhtar and Anurag Kashyap. With a run time of around 2 hours, 4 short stories and amazing acting done by all the actors (including kids) you will like it.
Bombay Talking celebrates 100 years of cinema and this combination of 4 different stories shows how cinema impacts every person in India, one way or the other.
1. Karan Johar‘s take is on a gay person’s life, career, love, ambitions, betrayal and struggle. How he tries to assess his co-worker Rani Mukherji’s husband to be gay and tries getting close to him. How the little girl singing ‘lag ja gale’ on the railway bridge inspires him and the partner he longs for. And ya, get ready for a never before ‘kiss scene’ seen on Indian screens.
2. Dibakar Banerjee portrays the ambitions of a lower middle class family and how he struggles to land a job for himself but keeps investing in rumoured business ideas (and fails miserably). His constant effort to impress her daughter with a brand new story every night will bring a smile on your face. With Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead role, you will be amazed (yet again) to see how talented this actor is.
3. Zoya Akhtar has shown us how not every boy in his childhood would like to play the regular sports. There could be other ambitions as well but then the regular Indian family will never understand such feelings. Like the one this boy has in this story, he wanted to become a dancer but his dad wants him to focus on manly sports. How Katrina Kaif became his life’s inspiration and how your life’s mentors come from unexpected places, like Katrina from shiela ki jawaani. The boy once even said to her sister, ‘Main bada hokar Shiela banoonga’.
4. Anurag Kashyap took us a ride through an ailing father’s wish to get his son go to Mumbai, meet Amitabh Bachchan and ensure he eats half of a murabba and then brings back the left over back home! Sounds funny indeed but the son did what was expected for his loving father and with all the shraddha in his heart he goes to Mumbai to meet his dad’s idol, Amitabh Bachchan. How this one ends will be an interesting thing to watch out!
After all the 4 stories are done, wait for the song. That song show glimpses of almost all movies from the last 100 years of Indian Cinema! Yes, have you ever watched a 1940’s or 1960’s songs on big screen? This one will mesmerize you for sure! Ends with all the current stars of Bollywood doing their gig.
All in all, good one time watch. My favourite – the shiela ki jawaani revisit. Go watch it, you will know why! 🙂
