7 myths of Social Media Marketing

If you the founder or a marketing executive and if your brand is not already on the social networking sites, then you are losing a lot [on a daily basis] to your competition!

Believe it or not social media marketing may not give you immediate [revenue] returns but it surely is going to be a big advantage for your brand. The way you would be able to interact with your customers or prospects, no one would have ever thought that it would be so easy. Every brand today is on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn. But there are few  myths that needs to be broken before you actually misjudge or mishandle the social media marketing concept.

Myth no.1 – We don’t need it.

Unless you make weapons of mass destruction [in which case you will not need any Social Media Marketing and is in the betterment of the people that it’s better avoided 🙂 ] otherwise you need to be here, there would be no better time to join the bandwagon and talk to your customers, prospects and even suspects and let them know who you are and/or how you care.

Myth no.2 – I do not see any results coming in?

It’s not banner advertising that you would be able to track conversations from your landing pages! Social Media marketing is an ongoing process. It is never about returns, it about engaging your customers and talking, need may not be official conversations as well.

Myth no.3 – It’s an extra work, let me outsource it!

One of the worst mistakes you would ever do is to outsource this activity. This work is all about talking to people through your company accounts at Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and even at LinkedIn Groups. Make sure a passionate employee takes care of this job – interacting with your prospects/ users/ customers. If you are not enthusiastic in the social media front then I guess you need not be there. As simple as that, I believe a company employee would be more suitable for this job.

Myth no.4 – Social Media Marketing is free and free things are not valued!

The sites where you can get your account created may come free but the human involvement will be the real cost. It’s not just about creating accounts at these forums; you need to be active here. Hire a qualified professional to talk to your customers, ensures proper content upload and timely updates.

Myth no. 5 – It’s new to India hence it does not affect us much.

The real flow of twitter and Facebook wave may be new to India but you would also see an influx of new celebrities joining these sites on a daily basis, you would see the tweets being mentioned in TV channels as well. The concept has been active for 2 years now, do join this media now or get left behind your competition!

Myth no. 6 – It’s only for the collage going kids.

Well, what do I say? Just because more and more young folks are using it and are active here does not make it ONLY for them. Social media sites are for everyone who needs to be in touch with their friends. In our case our customers, prospects etc. Many of the corporates have understood this aspect and hence are already using it actively. Last year I read a article in Economic times that Infosys got a business deal through twitter!

Myth no. 7 – Its way too hard and complicated for me to handle!

Well, it’s not that easy as it may sound but it’s not rocket science either. All you need to be aware of is that you are here to be active in all the accounts that you created across all social media platforms. Interact with your users, suspects, prospects and customers and make sure you do not have immediate expectations from this activity. This should go on side by side your real business.

But be very careful that you do not become a nuisance to others. Invite people to join your group/ follow you but don’t bug them. As its social media – the words spreads like wild fire; if you are here for securing positive feedback then your one wrong update/tweet can even take you to another extreme. Hence be very careful and in the long run you will reap the benefits.

All the best!
