Am an avid walker and to confession publicly, I hate going to the gym (like million others!). I brisk walk daily for about 45 minutes and all I used to do was listen to my favourite music or call up my family members. I soon realized calls get over fast and I end up listening to the songs and music most of the my walking time and this gets very repetitive. That’s when I decided to use this time more efficiently, hence this list. Since I have a Nexus 4, this list is for Android users only. But am sure iOS would have these as well. Apple fans, rejoice. Here we go:
1. RunKeeper – This one’s the most motivating app ever for all the running and walking enthusiasts. It keeps track of your pace (via GPS), a voice (optional) at a regular interval tells you how your pace has been, you can set up your own goals, compare, add friends, comment, check your map where you ran etc. All this in 1 RunKeeper account. You can update activities manually as well. Only thing is that it will increase your 3G bill since it uses data connectivity and GPS tracking. This is a small price to pay for something that motivates you to exercise. Worth it.
2. Umano: News Read To You – The name itself is self explanatory. This is an app where you set your category preference on the type of news you would like to hear – Business, Politics, Sports etc. and it will aggregate news from various related sites from the internet and read out news articles to you. Yes, I said read out. The articles are read by real people and recorded for you to hear them out. Works perfectly fine, with awesome clarity and keep me track of all the latest without me reading anything. And the best part is that if I feel the article has lost its juice mid way, I skip to next and then next and so on. Also important to note that this is not like a news delivering radio station. It reads full articles from websites of your category choice.
3. TED – Before I get to the app let me tell you that if you do not watch TED Talks, you are already committing a big crime. TED conferences are held all over the globe and you get to hear inspiring talks from some of the most inspiring people. Having said that I suggest you download the TED app on your phone and click on the head phone icon on top to listen to TED Radio hour. Worth your time. Also interesting is the ‘Inspire Me’ tab which allows you to watch some interesting talk shows depending on how much time you have to spare at that point in time! I loved it. TED is a short form for technology, entertainment and design. The punch line says it all – ‘Ideas Worth Spreading’.
4. TuneIn Radio – Since all gyaan and no fun does not sound that exiting, I suggest this Radio Station which gives you a choice from more than a lakh of radio stations to choose from (yes, I said more than one lakh!). Yes, from all over the globe. And not just from music stations but all kinds of stations related to news, talks, sports, comedy etc. Frankly, the options are so many that you would get tired of exploring that much! If you are tired of listing to the same old songs on your mobile, Tune in to TuneIn and expose yourself to the tunes of the world!
5. Dhingana – And last but not the least a Bollywood music app. You may ask why I am I suggesting this one. Well to answer that let me tell you that this choice comes from my personal experience of getting bored with songs on my own device, the tension to downloading new songs to ensure I get fresh and new energy to walk (yes, my earphones with interesting stuff coming out are my best buddies) and that too when India does not really have genuine sites to download legal music from. If they exist (after flipkart shut its music store down), aam aadmi does not know about it. Hence I use this app to listen to all the latest songs or use the inbuilt radio to play all the related songs of my choice.
My next step is to use these apps in my car while driving to work. I have not suggested audio books in this list as I love reading them. You may want to put that item in the list, your call. Also, if you feel I missed out on any other interesting app on Android do put it in the comments section, I would love to add it up in this post if I like it too (as much as you do).
Until next time, Keep walking!
Disclaimer: All these apps uses your 3G/2G data connectivity and would increase your data usage charges. Contact your telecom operator and select the best monthly plan.
In every small segment of the life style, the time tracking and management makes a better sense all the time and keeps everything updated and accelerated, and hence in excising also time keeps an utmost importance. I prefer to have a time tracking software that help me complete the exact time for exercising without any miss. Currently I am using cloud based Replicon's time tracking software – http://www.replicon.com/time-tracking-softwares.aspx which operates in a cloud based platform to manage the things go better all the time.
