You feel compelled to pay a waiter in a restaurant an extra 5% tip (or whatever), but get angry when an auto-wala asks for a Rs.10 extra!
The waiter does a job of taking your order and getting you your food from the kitchen. Might come in between to ask you for more or get you more stuff, but that’s it!
Where as an auto-wala does a lot of hard work than the other fellow (am sure you agree to this fact), who might actually deserve that extra 10 bucks, but we do not budge or may do so only when there is no alternative! Still keep that in mind and sulk for sometime!
But I would totally agree that the way these auto-walas demand that extra is not the right way, but I guess they also know if they do not do so, you will NOT tip them at the end of your trip, will you? Would you feel compelled to TIP them the way you feel when you pay for your restaurant bill? I am guessing the answer is a NO.
Similarly, when you order for a furniture at home, you would get it delivered and see that the worker who got it up to your home actually did a lot of hard work, but many of us do not feel that compulsion to tip him either!
My question is not on why we do NOT tip others, my question is – WHY on earth do we HAVE to TIP waiters and why do we feel so compelled to do so? and never in any other situation?
