Not that I have the same story as the movie or the book, but there are a few similarities ๐ no not about winning a contest or a lottery, but the way Dev (the character in the movie) remembers all the answers as itโs so much linked to his life that he could have answered them even in his sleep, like u can ride a cycle (if u have learnt one, that is, in your childhood) anytime in your life, does not really matter if the last time u did that was 20 years back…getting my point? Yes, this is what am trying to relate in my life!!
I am sure you all would also have had your share of memories which will always be with you even when they are such small things but somehow you don’t seem to forget!! Are we in sync? ya ? ok, great…letโs explore more…
Instance no. 1 –
In my 8th class our PT teacher asked us where the US Open is played….as usual ๐ I had no clue…and as no one answered for quite some time, he gave us a clue – what do you do once you are done in a toilet – everyone said FLUSH….well…here it was…the answer is Flushing Meadows Tennis Center. Well, this may sound normal but these are the few tiny little things in life that you always remember – god knows why!
Instance no. 2 –
I must have been in class 6 or 8, not too sure but we (all 3 brothers) pestered our dad to the core to buy us a cassette player (CDs were not known then) need not be a stereo, mono also would do!! We just wanted to listen to music… in this excitement my 2nd brother (the Scientist material whom I have referred
to in my 2nd post too) yes the same guy – thought of something weird – he said the music seems OK but there is no soul to it, (I said – yeah right) then he went on to say that – lets buy a amplifier to enhance the Music quality – so we checked with the 2 electronics stores in Gomia (they were the only 2) and we realized they will build it for us and it may cost us a fortune!! Hence he decided to BUILD IT HIMSELF –
Phew…yes you read it right – he went on to build a sound amplifier at a staggering young age of 13 or so (he is 2 years elder to me). In any case I had no clue what he wanted to do…So I said I will give you all
the money I have (angel funding ๐ ) – Well, I had only 85 bucks!! – [guess what – this was my total earnings which I got from all the relatives who used to give me money when we used to visit them] – What a risk – I had no clue what he is upto and I risked ALL my life’s savings !! Hats off to me I say! Well, to continue – It came out real well – with an investment of Rs.250 (rest was put in by him). Later I realized what an excellent job we did with such a small budget, by the way I was the helper in whenever he was working (after school) on his project. At the age of 11 I played with transformers/Diode/resister/capacitor/circuit board and many such things…. again …for many this may not be exciting but I will never forget this part of my life….. By the way… we also went on to upgrade to a better amplifier, better sound boxes, with better speakers, woofers, tweeters and a light system, a motor driven cart …the list is long enough….but I guess this conveys the point !! ๐
Instance 3 –
This relates to the time when cable TV was becoming a craze (and sadly we didn’t have one)…I guess it was 1990 (the time when Ramayan on Doordarshan was in full swing) – My dad and a friend’s dad called for a meeting within the colony seeking advice on getting cable tv for the locality. Obviously everyone agreed and with all the deposit collection and planning, they went to Delhi to order for the Dish Antenna, decoders, receivers and all the associated stuff involved with it. When the actual installation started above our building – it was a thrilling moment for me! I was so excited that I climbed up the ladder (it was a scary one and I had always dreaded doing this) to the roof top – A 3 storey building without boundary on the roof.
That was the first time in my life that I saw a channel other than Doordarshan – this was Star TV. This was a HK based channel, no specific content for India as it was not their market yet. The ‘Control Room’ was made next to my house (mezzanine floor). Ramu was the “Cable guy” he taught me many a things on how the decoder works…how I can change channel and all the 200 odd viewers (in the locality) who took the connection would see what I am tuning – I said it to myself – Awesome!! I also remember that after we had this connection the First Hindi Satellite Channel that got launched was ‘Zee TV’. It used to be live only for 3 hours a day – 7pm to 10pm. As we did not have the band width – I was assigned the job of tuning the channel back to something else at 10pm!!
As the funds kept growing and the collection went up we kept on buying more and more decoders hence we were able to view more channels at the same time…This was the time when Start TV distributed MTV and few years later when MTV moved out and started broadcasting independently – the music channel of Star TV went name less !! Yes that’s right…for a month or so they did not have a name for this music channel and then finally one day it started displaying Channel [V] …. the job was done by the cable revolution in my life … i used to be glued to Star Movies, MTV, Channel [V], Zee TV, Star Sports…and many more as we kept upgrading our network…
How does this relate to the topic of this post – well….even today, if you ask me questions in such fields I will not need any Helpline ๐ more such stories in my next post…not that I forgot…it was kind of getting too long…not sure if you would be interested in reading long stories…so more coming up in my next….
Love Adi (I mean – love, Adi)
