Kahaani review

Summary: A pregnant woman searching for her husband.

Another classy performance by Bidya sorry Vidya Balan. And this comes in just after she received a National Award for ‘The Dirty Picture’, what a way to say thank you. What an actress.

[A joke doing rounds – Having 3 lovers in ‘The Dirty Picture’, in ‘Kahaani’, getting pregnant was inevitable!]

Back to ‘Kahaani’, Bidya (in Bengal all V becomes B) is looking for her missing husband in Kolkatta where he came in from London on a work assignment. This is durga pooja time and it has been showcased really well. All bengali’s get neck deep in festivities during this time. Kolkatta plays an important role in the movie and it’s an integral part, it could just not have been any other city. Portrayal of bengolis is funny (without ever making fun of them) and the Kalighat police station is a funier place! 🙂

You would get in the theater thinking it would be a ‘drama’ movie but it turns out to be an edge of the seat thriller. One clue leads to another and it gets very gripping. Ensure you get in quickly during the interval, you should not miss that scene for the pop corn. The turn of events that follow in Bidya’s pursuit of getting to her husband, opens up newer and newer folds to this suspense hence the chill and the thrill encompasses you. A very gripping entertainment. Once in a while you will cringe as well!

Performances that needs a praise apart from Vidya Balan – Rana (Parambrata Chatterjee) – This bengoli actor is a real find and did an excellent job! Mr. Khan (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) this guy was also a pick pocket-er in Munnabhai mbbs and more recently can be seen in Paan Singh Tomar. What you will also love about this movie is that every other short role actor was locally picked and they did a marvelous job. You will love the insurance agent!

I would also appreciate the story telling angle. How the movie keeps you engrossed and asks you to think harder to get to her missing husband. The last 20 minutes is worth every penny of your ticket.

Kahaani has been directed by Sujoy Ghosh, Hope he makes more such movies! He is the same person who made ‘Aladin’ and now you wonder why! But his ‘Jhankaar Beats’ was class apart!

As far as Vidya Balan is concerned, she is on a roll! This is her 4th women centric movie – The Dirty Picture, No One Killed Jessica and Ishqiya. Way to go girl!

Kahaani is a must watch for 3 things:

1. The thrill;
2. Bidya Bagchi; and
3. All the actors in supporting role.

Go watch.
