Happy Birthday to you

What used to happen on your birthday? Those were the days when you used to really prepare for this day. Tell your school friends (over n over) to come over for the real fun and frolic! Promising it to be better than other guy’s parties!
On the D day, you get to stand in front of your class, distribute toffees to your buddies, get all the attention, you ever desired (frankly I used to sweat). At home your family gets busy preparing for your Birthday party. I used to have a handful of my buddies invited. The party was the ‘usual’ – from our childhood we used to go late to the parties 🙁 have the usual gifting ceremony – cake cutting ceremony – eat the puri, chole, pulav, daal, subzi, gulab jamoon and the cake that was cut. Mind you this cake used to be home made always! Making it was a very long and tedious process, the entire afternoon used to get into that and the funny part, whosoever birthday it was, it used to be that guy who was supposed to do all the laborious work for the cake, with the directions from the head chef(mom), ofcourse!

There used to be a music system – called stereo or ‘The Deck’ with the speaker boxes bigger than your suitcase, slightly loud music, dance, different lights, dance and drama. Mind you all this just before the eating feasta ! You might say am referring to a dance floor + dj, but that was not the case, this set up was inside the house, in the living room (not a big one either), 10 people dancing in that space, missing hitting each other, stepping on each others foot. That was the real fun! June being the summer month (kissing monsoons), we used to sweat like dogs and then dry ourselves out while having dinner.

Wow, what FUN!

NOW, what happens these days? Lot of phone calls the nite before and in the morning. Family n friends come over with the birthday cake at 12am. A lot happens on the birthday eve. The next day also goes on responding to friends, pals on facebook, twitter, emails, sms, phone calls. An evening party, you are with much fewer friends that you used to have in your school days. Unless you are rich and famous to have a terrace party and call your friends from all over the country, or for that matter from all over the globe:) I would prefer a paid trip, if any of my rich friend is thinking of inviting me for a Birthday party :):) I will surely bring a nice gift.
I wish I could live my childhood birthday parties again!

  1. ya me too. Those parties used to be very small scale, sweet, with close pals, without hesitation and had lots of fun!

Thank you so much for your multiple wishes 🙂
