Gully Boy: Movie Review

There are movies you like, then there are a few you love, but rarely you get to see movies which are hyped to the core and they actually live upto this expectation. Gully Boy fits right there.

Raw to the core and so damn relatable. There were so many times when I had goosebumps (this is a rare event for it to happen multiple times in the same movie). If Ranveer gets a National Award for Gully Boy, I will not be surprised at all (his role in Padmaavat comes close second is awesomeness).

The rawness of this movie simply amazed me. The very first frame where Ranveer appears is so subtle that I just did not notice him (since the focus of that scene was on his friend). In the entire movie there was nothing extra and every minute made sense even when its a two and half hour movie. Every scene, every dialogue and every song was there because the story needed it. Watch out for the new star that took birth from this movie ‘MC Sher’, superb performance. Boht hard, boht hard, boht hard!! Job well done by Ranveer’s mother and Alia’s mother. Alia did what she does best – excellent performance. The songs have already made it to the top of the charts all over.

The movie also celebrates all the top rappers from India (located globally). Most of the rappers featured in the movie actually appeared with their real name. This is an amazing platform for them to fly off from here onwards. Could not have got a better launch pad for their career. The rap battles were the most loved segments in Gully Boy for me.

The best part about the movie is that it connects emotionally with every generation. Be it the millennials, middle age or the senior citizens (am making some assumptions here). There are a few movies that I can watch again and again and I do not get bored, am adding Gully Boy to that list. Surprisingly these are all Zoya Akhtar movies only in the recent times – Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Dil Dhadakne Do to state a few.

Later this year it will be streaming on Amazon Prime but I highly recommend you watch this on the big screen and you got to do it now because apna time aayega nahin, apna time aa gaya hai.
