1 Line Review: Out of this world, completely engaging, a must watch and nothing like anything made before.
I did not watch Avatar in IMAX 3D and I must admit, I should have. The experience of watching a true 3D movie in an IMAX audi is so thrilling that you would love to continue watching such amazing movies over and over again. Yes, it’s that good.
Background on why I love this movie so much: I am a space lover, keep watching videos of space and satellite launches on websites like NASA and Space. Have watched hundreds of videos on how astronauts live in the International Space Station. What MARS Rover has been up to and tracking its latest discoveries. What Elon Musk’s company Space X is doing and the amazing rockets that his company is building. In simple words, space amazes me and am always hungry for more. Hence the anxiety built up a lot before this movie and I read almost every article that came in nytimes, space, mashable, businessinsider, latimes etc. Even when I watched the movie with so much expectations, Gravity still made me sit up and watch the entire movie from the edge of my seat. At the end of it I was so immersed in it that I wanted more. Felt like shouting ‘once more’! But will surely watch it again after a gap of a week or so.
About the movie: Gravity is a story of 2 astronauts Sandra Bullock and George Clooney who are working in space and when space debris create disaster in their lonely lives up there and when all other scientists and astronauts died and they lost all contacts with Houston, how they planned a come back! How they helped each other in this rescue mission. Was it even possible? Watch it to believe it.
In outer space, above the earth’s atmosphere there’s no stopping. Once you gain movement you will continue to be in that motion unless an external force is applied and then you will change course but continue moving. That means if space debris hit you and you are lucky to be alive you will gain momentum and keep moving till eternity! Now that scares the s*it out of me! You will see this happen multiple of times in this movie.
What really stuns you is the real good 3D cinematography, the shots of earth from space will take your breath away, sunrises and sunsets from the astronauts helmet view (amazing), the long shots which amazes you since there are hardly any cuts – the continuity of the shots makes you get engrossed into the story (plus the imax experience that lets you believe you really are lost in space! incredible), the weightlessness feeling you get yourself watching Sandra cope with it, that scary feeling when you know that there is no one, absolutely no one who is near you, there is no oxygen other than what little you have in your space suit and in the space stations, you have lost all contacts with the earth stations, you keep speaking into the mic hoping someone will respond – ‘Houston in the blind’, that feeling when you know you can get down to earth but you are stuck so badly that you cannot handle the situation alone and let yourself die?
After the first hit this is what happens: SANDRA BULLOCK: (as Ryan) Explorer, do – do you copy? Houston, do you copy? Houston, this is mission specialist Ryan Stone. I am off structure and I’m drifting. Do you copy? Anyone? Anybody? Do you copy? Please copy. Please.
There are many emotional moments and you should be indulged into it to get the real feel.
George Clooney keeps the humour in the movie and we all know he is very good at that. But then our lady Sandra bullock takes the cake. With so much more of her role in the script and her outstanding performance, she deserves and applause. Remember her in ‘Speed’? I do! And I liked her.
Not that I care much but then there’s one scene (image above) where I felt it was a little dramatic and not realistic (then I read about it and realized that others also have felt the same) is when Sandra Bullock tries to rescue George Clooney by being stuck into parachute strings. Since there is no gravitation Clooney was not going anywhere and it would have taken only a small nudge to get him up. Still Clooney unbuckles himself from her rope and starts to move away. Guess dramatization was required being a movie plot. Else everything else seemed 100% perfect!
Here are the many articles which are doing the rounds on how great this movie is. Even real astronauts have watched it and given a big thumps up.
Warner Bros’ website gravity has some amazing images from this movie. And the soundtrack is just out of this world (literally!).
It should NEVER be watched on a laptop or TV, this is an IMAX material only.
Didn't have the best script in the world, but still worked so well with its visuals and overall, grand spectacle. Good review.
Ya the script was not that great, but the visuals made all the difference. Thanks for the appreciation!
