1 Line Review: Awesome sets, awesome camera work, awesome costumes. Those were the only 3 good things.
I would like to rate differently for different departments hence here are the ratings:
The last time I went for a Bhansali movie on the first day itself was when Saawariya released in 2007 on Diwali. The very same day ‘Om Shanti Om’ was also released, I chose Bhansali over SRK. Sounds like a wise decision, it was a pathetic decision.
Yesterday, it was not that bad as Saawariya but then I have totally lost hope on Bhansaliji, he makes these godly movies with no substance. Colour theme based only I guess. Blue, Black and now red.
Having said that you should definitely watch ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela’ for the sheer opulence of the sets and costumes. Magnanimous they are. Many a times I lost track of the story and dialogues and started concentrating on the palace, scenes behind, costumes etc. The very effective marketing jargon fits very well here – God is in the details.
Sadly, a movie is not only about sets and costumes. This one is a love story between the 2 communities who have been at war for the last 500 years and this movie portrays how the two protagonists sacrifice themselves to give the ‘aman and shanti ka paigaam’ to both the sides. A rip off from Romeo Juliet. Or so the credit says.
Deepika and Ranveer have acted superbly, no doubts. At few emotional scenes you might find Ranveer a little ‘kaccha’ but then give him the benefit of a new comer. With 2 songs showcasing his 6 packs, ladies would love him even more. But ya, unlike Saawariya there is no towel scene. In contrast there are tons of kissing (which was supposed to be censored but its not). Guess the censor board is coming off he age. Good. India being this big populous country, censoring even the kisses in movies was the best display of hypocrisy. Anyways, talking about acting, Supriya Pathak as Leela’s mother was both classy and fitted well in the role, few of her dialogues are real funny.
Music is good. Though it was very loud at times (guess that was Cinepolis’ problem) but ‘tattad tattad’, ‘lahu muh lag gaya’ and ‘Nagada’ will make you loooooove these songs. The songs are good, the sets are good, clothes etc. everything nice about them. Even Priyanka Chopra does an item number. Total waste. Another song ‘Ishqyaun Dhishqyaun’ yet again total waste.
Overall, the heavy usage of guns and shooting all over, even aiming at kids, playing with shooting did not impress me. At all. I was actually getting irritated. There are many useless scenes in the movie which could have been done without. And the length of the movie – more than two and half hours. Patience runs out Bhansaliji.
I take away only 1 lesson here – never go for a Sanjay Leela Bhanshali movie on the first day. Its a big gamble where I have been the loser. Always.

ok movie. Worth a watch may be. But I didn't enjoyed it. If you love the typical romance movies with good screen play may be this is for you.
Galtiyon ki Sanjay Leela?
Awesome review Aditya..Always like the '1 line Review' part in your reviews..I learnt from your lesson & will surely avoid this movie 🙂
he he yeah right actually! 🙂
Hi Neha, exactly, I did not like it either. Overall.
Thankyou Dipashri for your appreciation, as always! 🙂 Good lesson you learnt today! 🙂
After every handful of pop-corn I would pick, the screen would either break into a colourful song or Gun-Shoot Noises. Wondered where was the substance. Most pathetic movie that I have watched in past couple of years. SLB exhausted his sense and sensibilities of movie-making with Black. Needs Retirement.
So very well said Neha, we had the same feeling. Those gunshots took our ears out of our brains. As much as I loved the sets and the colors and the awesome sets, it did not have the substance. PLUS the double meaning dialogues, reference to blue films etc. men running behind women to rape. Rape ka badla rape etc. I did not like these things at all.
U must be given bravery award;)
Yep.. Having said that the characters were well etched and performances were excellent as you very rightly mentioned. "Not so lengthy" role of Deepika's bhabhi performed well and quite worthy. Cinematography and Costumes of course are indeed the highlight. Maybe SLB should just be the Technical Director and rest of the Job can be handed over to some other director.
he he please recommend me to the President for this bravery award! 😉
Yup! Sahi baat hai. He should direct for the right sets, costumes, camera angles etc.
An interesting way to rate a movie Aditya. You have highlighted the flaws and positives of the movie really well 🙂
